ASEAN-China Economic Agreements

China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have signed a series of agreements aimed at promoting economic cooperation, trade, and diplomatic relations. Here are some of the key agreements signed between China and ASEAN:

  1. Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Between ASEAN and China: This agreement was signed in 2002 and served as the foundation for economic cooperation between China and ASEAN member countries. It outlined the principles and areas of collaboration, including trade, investment, and economic integration.

  2. ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) : The ACFTA, implemented in stages between 2005 and 2010, aimed to create a free trade area between China and ASEAN. It involved the reduction or elimination of tariffs on a wide range of goods, fostering greater trade flows.

  3. Agreement on Trade in Goods of the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Between ASEAN and China : This agreement, signed in 2004, outlined the specific provisions for tariff reduction and elimination for various goods traded between China and ASEAN countries.

  4. ASEAN-China Investment Agreement : This agreement, signed in 2009, aims to promote investment flows between China and ASEAN member countries by establishing a framework for investment protection and facilitation.

  5. ASEAN-China Free Trade Area Upgrade Protocol : Signed in 2015, this protocol aimed to further enhance trade relations between China and ASEAN by expanding the scope of tariff reductions and addressing issues related to trade in goods, services, and investment.

  6. Protocol to Amend the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Between ASEAN and China : This protocol, signed in 2015, aimed to deepen economic integration by addressing issues such as customs procedures, rules of origin, and trade facilitation.

  7. Joint Statement on Production Capacity Cooperation : In 2017, China and ASEAN issued a joint statement on enhancing production capacity cooperation, which aimed to foster collaboration in industrial capacity, technology transfer, and infrastructure development.

  8. Protocol to Implement the Eighth Package of Commitments Under ACFTA : Signed in 2020, this protocol aimed to further enhance trade and economic cooperation between China and ASEAN by reducing or eliminating tariffs on additional products.
