Spain-China Strategic Partnership

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez undertook a four-day state visit to China from September 8 to 12, during which he held meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and other high-ranking officials.

The year 2024 marks the 51st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Spain, and next year will be the 20th anniversary of the establishment of their comprehensive strategic partnership.

The two nations expressed their intention to prioritize the high-level alignment of their development strategies and seek deeper integration of their growth drivers, aiming to achieve concrete results in their mutually beneficial cooperation.

China is focused on increasing cooperation, particularly in areas such as e-commerce and cross-border logistics, further optimizing trade and investment ties, and facilitating the entry of Spanish companies into its markets.

Prime Minister Sanchez confirmed Spain’s commitment to strengthening ties with China and expressed a strong desire to enhance bilateral exchanges across various sectors, including culture, education, science, and technology, all of which contribute to deepening mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries' peoples.

China is Spain’s largest trading partner outside the EU, according to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, with total trade between the two countries standing at USD 48.6 billion in 2023.
