China-Uruguay Negotiations of Free Trade Agreement

According to a Reuters report on September 8, Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou confirmed on the 8th that the Uruguayan government is advancing free trade negotiations with China. The Uruguayan government is currently in contact with China on the Free Trade Agreement, and the Chinese government has formally responded to Uruguayan’s proposal to promote a free trade agreement.

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics of Uruguay, since 2013, China has been the largest exporter of Uruguayan beef, soybeans and cellulose. In 2020, Uruguay's exports of goods were 8.076 billion U.S. dollars. Among them, exports to China were 2.149 billion U.S. dollars (approximately 14.8 billion U.S. dollars), accounting for 27%. China maintained its position as Uzbekistan's largest export market.
