The Chamber of Deputies approved in the first reading the bill that eliminates the IMU (Municipal Property Tax) on a primary home (not rented out) owned in Italy by Italians registered with AIRE (Register of Italians Resident Abroad) in small towns.
The text - Amendments to Article 1, paragraph 741, of Law no. 160 of December 27, 2019, regarding the equalization of the tax regime for the application of the municipal property tax on properties owned in the national territory by citizens registered in the Register of Italians Resident Abroad - now moves to the Senate for the second reading.
The text introduces three tiers of relief based on the cadastral income of the properties; the measure applies to properties located in municipalities with up to 5,000 inhabitants.
For homes with a cadastral income up to 200 euros, the IMU will be completely eliminated; for those with an income between 201 and 300 euros, the tax will be reduced by 40 per cent, while for incomes between 301 and 500 euros, the reduction will be 67 per cent. At the same time, the TARI (waste tax) and the waste tariff will be reduced by 50 per cent, with municipalities having the option to maintain the two-thirds reduction.
